Planet of the Apes (1968)

A few awful monologues and a completely impossible plotline make for an entertaining but ultimately very flawed bit of pop culture.

PO Box (1995)

Ninety minutes of self-indulgent, self-important nonsense that is no less ridiculous or meaningless than porn and has a distinct '80s feel despite the fact it was made in the mid-'90s.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984)

Such a beautiful film from a young Miyazaki that would simultaneously reveal to the world what he could do and the shape of sci fi to come.

As Tears Go By (1988)

Wong Kar Wai's directoral debut is vivid both in color scheme and emotional content and displays the preternatural instict this filmmaker has for bringing a story to life.

Caligula (1979)

Porn that calls itself art is neither.

Kirikou and the Sorceress (1998)

So much more interesting and magical than most American animated movies.

Sweetie (1989)

I want to make movies like this, if I ever make movies that is.

Japanese Summer: Double Suicide (1967)

Obsurdism is confusing, but refreshing.

The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

Endlessly quotalbe and lovable.

Dark Crystal (1982)

There's always a place in my heart for this movie.

Fallen Angels (1995)

Caught my first Wong Kar-Wai on a really good-looking 35mm print and it was excellent.

Saved! (2004)

Having grown up in Utah County, this movie gets an emotional response out of me.

Beauty and the Beast (1991)

I had never really realized how different this era of Disney films was from, say, "Sleeping Beauty" until I revisited this really funny (and fairly adult friendly) movie.

Annie Hall (1977)

Apparently the Academy still valued art in 1977.

Fantasia 2000 (2000)

Not nearly as good or as trippy as the first, but still pretty cool.

Fantasia (1940)

Probably my favorite Disney movie.

King Lear (1987)

Godard crafts a strange futuristic nonsense peice about recreating Shakespeare's King Lear from memory after it has been lost, and though it's sort of hard to follow (like a lot of Godard's later work) it's beautiful and I'd love to watch it again.

Danielson: A Family Movie OR Make A Joyful Noise HERE (2004)

I spent a good portion of the film contemplating whether the movie (and indeed the entire Danielson project) was perhaps a mockumentary or elaborate joke, but in either case, this was entertaining enough, with the exception of the musical performances which were difficult to hear due to the amateur style of the cinematography.

Hard Eight (1996)

Not on par with the rest of his work, but P.T. Anderson had a pretty solid debut.

Last Year at Marienbad (1961)

Kind of boring, but Resnais is a genius and this movie is innovative and important.

Two-Lane Blacktop (1971)

This movie forced me to love James Taylor, Laurie Bird, cars, and itself, despite the improbable nature of the storyline.

Il Postino (1994)

It certainly has its moments, but this may have tried too hard to create a "moral of the story," and ended up doing so at the expense of one of its own warm-hearted characters.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)

I know that I'm ridiculous, but I might like this more than when I was five.

Touch The Sound: A Sound Journey With Evelyn Glennie (2004)

How could I NOT love a beautifully shot documentary about a deaf percussionist who completely kills!?!?!

Blast of Silence (1961)

The best tired-of-everything-New-Yorker voice-over I've ever heard, or will ever hear since it's completely played out by now.

The Gruffalo (2010)

I have a hard time trying to watch this sort of kid film.

Let's Pollute (2010)

A bit of really good satyre, but not really a motivator for change.

The Lost Thing (2010)

Very much deserving of the Oscar it won.

The Crush (2010)

Went from cute to creepy too fast for my liking.

God of Love (2010)

Funny and stylish, but I felt like it was too much of an Anderson rip off.

Wish 143 (2010)

A blend of silliness and seriousness is good, but this is too drastic in its mood changes.

Na Wewe (2010)

Well made and fairly suspenseful, but the ending was sort of lame.

The Confession (2010)

Should have won.

Kerouac, the Movie (1985)

Not an exceptional documentary, but Kerouac is such a fascinating subject that it's worth seeing anyway.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)

Probably my least favorite Anderson film, but still an amazing and entertaining ride.

Eraserhead (1976)

Always worth seeing again.

Inception (2010)

I expected this to depreciate a great deal after my first viewing, but on this second viewing I noticed more cinematic strengths and the same amount of drawbacks.

Stella (1955)

The "Breakfast At Tiffany's" of old melodramatic Greek film.

I am Trying to Break Your Heart (2002)

A strong documentation of the events surrounding one of my favorite albums.

Mystery Science Theatre 3000: Hercules Unchained (1992)

I respect any movie that can make me laugh uncontrolably for five minutes, and that happened three times during this one!

Walmart: The High Cost of a Low Price (2005)

They put into a concise, well organized film the logic behind the rant-inspiring, disorganized rage I've felt for many years.

Paper Heart (2009)

Valentine's Day Indie Romance Marathon 3/3: Like, the cutest movie ever.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

Valentine's Day Indie Romance Marathon 2/3: One of my all-time favorite movies is perfect whether you're alone or with someone on V Day.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010)

Valentine's Day Indie Romance Marathon Part 1/3: Fighting for love has never been this funny before.

The Fearless Freaks (2005)

While I was not shocked to find that one of my favorite bands has such an interesting story, I was pleasantly surprised to see the documentary about them organized so masterfully by such an inexperienced filmmaker.

The Illusionist (2010)

Delicately written by an immortalized master, wonderfully animated and massively underrated, this is one of my favorite films of the year 2010.
